‘Scooby-Doo’ detective Velma is a lesbian—but you probably already knew that

I’m sure most ‘Scooby-Doo’ fans always pegged Velma to be gay. Well, good news: some producers confirmed that our favorite Scooby-Doo gang nerd is indeed a lesbian. Marvel’s James Gunn even shared how the studio watered down his original script of the live-action Scooby Doo film in 2002 which supposedly showed Velma’s sexuality.

Gunn’s tweet was in response to a fan’s plea for the filmmaker to make their “live-action lesbian Velma dreams come true.” “I tried!” Gunn tweeted. “But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”

The sequel mentioned was “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed,” where Velma was romantically involved with Patrick Wisely. Gunn divulged, however, that fans could take hints of Velma’s sexuality from the movie’s deleted scenes

Even Sarah Michelle Geller (who played Daphne in the films) revealed that she filmed a kissing scene with her co-star Linda Cardellini (who played Velma), but it didn’t make the final cut. Geller even said, “Linda is quite a kisser.”

Back in 2017, Gunn initially hinted at how the films were watered down through a throwback Facebook post. “I had written an edgier film geared toward older kids and adults, and the studio ended pushing it into [a] clean cut children’s film,” Gunn wrote.
